Reiki (ray-key) is an ancient form of Japanese energy healing. It is used for stress-reduction and relaxation, and when the body is fully relaxed physical, emotional and spiritual healing occurs.
The word “reiki” translates into Universal Life Force Energy. Rei = Universal Life Force and Ki = Energy. A Reiki healer is tapping into this life force that creates and sustains us all and channeling it into the energy of the client. Reiki energy clears blockages and restores balance to the client’s personal energy field. This raises the vibrational level of the energy that runs through and around the client promoting a sense of peace and calm.
Reiki was introduced to the west after World War II, but it wasn’t until recent breakthroughs in both science and medicine that the reiki process gained validity in the United States. We now know that the body and the brain are connected and in constant communication. Everything that impacts the body, mind, or emotions are stored both in the body and the brain. Today, over 800 U.S. hospitals use reiki as part of their regular patient care. A research at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT showed that Reiki improved patient sleep by 86%, reduced pain by 78%, reduced nausea by 80%, and reduced anxiety by 94%.
A Reiki treatment consists of the client laying comfortably on a massage table, fully clothed except for shoes. The practitioner provides a relaxing environment by darkening the room and playing soft music. During the 50-minute session, the Reiki practitioner will place his/her hands lightly on or just above the client’s body at specific points that are known to house the main energy systems. Many clients fall completely asleep during the session which only further promotes healing. Physically, the client’s heartbeat will slow, the brain waves will calm, and breath will become more relaxed while the energy flows more freely.
Reiki can never cause any harm, it is not a religion or even affiliated with any religion, and it works in harmony with all other kinds of treatment including medical and psychological care. After treatment, most clients report feeling both completely relaxed and re-energized. Some report feeling as if they have just awoken from a long nap, others report feeling lighter, calmer, and more focused. The benefits will continue up to a week after the session.
